TRADITIONAL MEDICAL CARE
Tucson is home to the University of Arizona College of Medicine which is on the cutting edge of both cancer and heart transplantation research.
The Arizona Cancer Center is a comprehensive cancer center with the highest ranking given by the National Cancer Institute. Although it is now entirely located at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, a new state of the art outpatient oncology center is targeted to open in August of 2006.
The new Cancer Center Clinic at UMC North will be an easily accessible “one stop center” with comprehensive services, where cancer patients can see their physicians, receive laboratory services, outpatient treatments and ongoing care and have access to resources such as cancer research, support groups, nutritional information, therapeutic massage and salon services. For more information about cancer treatment and research in Tucson see www.azcc.arizona.edu.
Cardiac care in Tucson is also world renowned. Under the direction of Jack C. Copeland, M.D. who began the heart transplant program at the University of Arizona in 1979, the survival rate of transplant patients is among the highest in the United States. Dr. Copeland and the other members of his transplant team have also been instrumental in the use and development of bridge devices which keep patients alive while waiting for donor hearts. More information about University of Arizona medical and research facilities can be found at www.azumc.com.
A number of other excellent hospital facilities are located conveniently throughout the metropolitan Tucson area. Further information about some of the local hospitals can be found at www.northwestmc.com (Northwest Hospital), www.tmcaz.com (Tucson Medical Center), and www.tucsonhearthospital.com (Tucson Heart Hospital which specializes in cardiac care.) Tucson is also home to many top-flight physicians and surgeons in private practice providing excellent primary and specialized care. |

ALTERNATIVE MEDICAL CARE |
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Because of its mild dry climate and abundant sunshine, Tucson has historically been focused on health and wellness and is continuing this tradition into the future.
Dr. Andrew Weil, the leader of the integrative medicine movement which has been gaining widespread popularity in this country, is a resident of Tucson and has been at the forefront of new developments in his field. The University of Arizona College of Medicine and the University Medical Center have embraced the integrative medical approach and are now training medical doctors in holistic treatment as a complement to traditional medical care.
Tucson is also home to two world-renowned destination health spas. Both Canyon Ranch and Miraval-Life in Balance Spa offer health and wellness education and provide affordable day packages for local residents. See www.CanyonRanch.com and www.MiravalResort.com for further details.
Because Arizona is one of only a handful of states to license and regulate naturopathic and homeopathic physicians, alternative medical choices are readily available. Tucson also has an abundance of excellent chiropractic care practitioners.
